Meet The Icons: Makayla Chambers

Makayla Chambers is one of the newest faces in women’s hybrid racing and a rising competitor preparing for HYROX Melbourne. Makayla represents the new wave of women stepping into strength, endurance, and performance-driven training. 

We caught up with her to hear how she found her sport, what makes HYROX different, and why community plays such a big role in her journey. 

Q: How did your training journey begin, and what drew you into HYROX specifically? 
A: I’ve always loved being active, but for years I never found “my” sport. I tried soccer and swimming, but nothing really stuck. When I first walked into the gym, I didn’t know what I was doing and stayed in the abs-and-cardio zone because I was too intimidated to touch the weights. Slowly I started learning, and strength and conditioning opened up a whole new world for me.

What drew me into HYROX was that mix of strength, conditioning, and endurance — it felt like everything I loved in one place. And the atmosphere is unreal. After my first HYROX relay in 2024, I was hooked. 

Q: What is it about hybrid training that keeps you coming back? 
A: I love the variety and the challenge. HYROX forces you to be well-rounded. You’ve got running, strength movements and conditioning. It pushes you mentally and physically, and I love that feeling of testing myself. Plus, the community is amazing. Everyone’s in it together, pushing each other, and celebrating the big and small wins. That energy is addictive. 

Q: Can you share a bit about how your training evolved before HYROX? 
A: In 2023, training became a huge part of my life. I competed in CrossFit comps, running events, and even finished my first half marathon. Adding running alongside strength work helped me find my groove in hybrid training, and that’s when everything started to click. By the time I tried HYROX, it felt like a natural progression. 

Q: What motivates you to keep improving and staying consistent with HYROX training?
A: Progress is everything for me. I love training for performance and doing things I never imagined I could. HYROX pushes you to show up and be better than yesterday. And my friends and coach play a massive role too. We train together all the time, push each other, and have fun with it. That makes a huge difference. 

Q: What are your goals as you head toward HYROX Melbourne?
A: I’d love to get a flag, make the podium, and eventually go to Worlds. That’s the dream. But right now I’m focused on showing up, doing the work, and becoming the strongest version of myself. HYROX Melbourne is the next big step, and I’m all in.
