Meet The Icons: Cynthia Hamilton

Meet Cynthia Hamilton — rising AFLW star and proud Sydney Swan. Cynthia made an instant impact in her debut season, taking home the club’s inaugural Best & Fairest award. Known for her toughness, skill, and fearless attack on the ball, she’s proven to be a game-changer whether she’s up forward or in the midfield.

In 2025, Cynthia has continued to deliver big moments. She’s played almost every round, and continues to light up the field with her energy and determination. Her Round 1 performance was one to remember - a NAB AFLW Goal of the Year nomination for a stunning effort against the Tigers, weaving through multiple defenders before finishing with a composed, classy goal.

We caught up with Cynthia to hear more about her journey,  from where it all began to what drives her today.

Q: Tell us about how your journey in AFL began and what it’s been like so far.
A: I grew up in a really sporty family, so footy was always part of my life. My sisters and I used to kick the ball around in the backyard, and that’s where it all started. I fell in love with the game early, the energy, the competitiveness, the team side of it. Getting drafted to the Swans and pulling on the red and white for the first time was honestly a dream come true. Winning the club’s first Best & Fairest in my debut season was surreal - I didn’t expect it, but it just showed me how much hard work can pay off.

Q: What motivates you to keep improving and performing at your best?
A: My motivation comes from wanting to make an impact for the team. I love being part of a group that’s building something special here at Sydney. Every game, I just want to play my role, give everything I’ve got, and keep getting better. My family’s been a huge influence too, they’ve always backed me in and reminded me to enjoy it and stay grounded.

Q: You’ve had some standout moments already — what’s been a highlight for you?
A: The Round 1 goal this season definitely stands out. It was one of those plays where everything just clicked - I saw the space, trusted my instincts, and went for it. To be nominated for Goal of the Year was pretty special, but more than anything, I love those moments where you can feel the energy lift across the whole team.

Q: What mindset do you take into every game?
A: For me, it’s about staying fearless. That’s something I always tell myself,  to go hard, back myself, and not hold back. Whether it’s a contest, a tackle, or a shot on goal, I want to play with intent and heart. That’s when I feel most like myself.

Cynthia’s journey is a testament to resilience and passion. From backyard kickarounds to the AFLW stage, she continues to inspire with her fearless spirit and love for the game.
