Meet The Icons: Bienne Terita

Meet Bienne Terita – a true powerhouse on the rugby field. As a winger for the Australian Rugby 7’s team, Bienne recently showcased her exceptional talent on the world stage at the Paris 2024 Olympics. 

Q: Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your rugby journey?
A: I’m Bienne, and I play on the wing for rugby sevens team. I first picked up a rugby ball when I was around 11 years old. Before that, I was playing Oz Tag, but my introduction to contact sports was when I was about 13 or 14. So, I’ve been playing for about 7 or 8 years now.

Q: What do you find most rewarding about playing rugby?
A: For me, it’s definitely the relationships I’ve built along the way. The time we spend together, working hard towards a common goal, it creates such a strong bond between teammates. Being part of that journey—pushing each other, celebrating together—is something really special.

Q: What’s been a highlight of your career so far?
A: Hands down, making my Olympic debut was a huge highlight. What made it even more memorable was getting to share that moment with a lot of the same girls I’ve played with since I was younger. And having my family there to support me, especially in a completely different country, made it all feel even more special. It’s a moment I’ll never forget.

Q: Your coach often talks about playing without fear—what does that mean for you?
A: Yeah, that’s a big one for us. It’s about going out on the field with the mindset that you have nothing to lose. Knowing you’ve done the hard work, trusting in your teammates, and just having the confidence to play your game. At the end of the day, it’s about enjoying the experience and having fun while you’re at it.
