Meet The Icons: Agnes Emma-Nnopu and Unique Thompson

Agnes Emma-Nnopu and Unique Thompson are powerful forces in the WNBL, proudly representing the Sydney Flames while bringing their own unique journeys, backgrounds, and strengths to the court. These athletes embody what it means to show up, work hard, and play for something bigger than yourself. 

Q: How did your basketball journey begin? 
Agnes: 
I’m originally from Melbourne, but my basketball journey really began in Tasmania. I started playing basketball to make friends. My family immigrated from Nigeria, and sport became a space where I could connect with people and feel a sense of belonging. I never imagined it would turn into a professional career, but once I started playing, I fell in love with the game.
Unique: 
I’m from Mobile, Alabama, and my journey started in grade 8 when I hit a big growth spurt. My dad introduced me to basketball and from that moment, I was hooked. It gave me confidence, purpose, and a way to challenge myself. I’ve loved the game ever since. 

Q: What part of your game are you most proud of?
Agnes: 
My hustle, for sure. I take a lot of pride in rebounding and defending, doing the gritty work that helps the team succeed. I also love that I can continue to be an offensive threat. I bring energy, effort, and intensity every time I step on the court.
Unique: 
For me, it’s knowing my teammates can always rely on me. They trust me, and they know I’ll always have their back. Being dependable and someone the team can lean on means everything to me. 

Q: What motivates you to keep pushing and improving?
Agnes: 
I’m motivated by growth — both as an athlete and as a person. I want to keep getting better, keep learning, and keep challenging myself. Representing my family, my culture, and my team pushes me to give my all every single day.
Unique: 
My motivation comes from my teammates and the love I have for the game. I want to show up consistently, do my job, and contribute in any way I can. Knowing that the team trusts me makes me want to keep raising my standard. 

Q: What does it mean to represent the Sydney Flames and be a Rockwear Icon?
Agnes: 
It means a lot. Being part of the Sydney Flames is special — it’s a group that supports each other on and off the court. Being a Rockwear Icon is about representing strength, confidence, and hard work, and that aligns perfectly with who I am.
Unique: 
It’s an honour. The Flames are all about culture, connection, and commitment, and Rockwear celebrates strong women who show up for themselves and each other. I’m proud to represent both.
